Fragrant Hills Park Overview

A comprehensive guide to Fragrant Hills Park, a beautiful natural area famous for its autumn foliage and scenic viewpoints.

Fragrant Hills Park, also known as Xiangshan Park, is a beautiful natural area located in the western part of Beijing. It is famous for its stunning autumn foliage, when the leaves of the maple trees turn vibrant shades of red and gold.

The park features numerous hiking trails, ancient temples, and scenic viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the city. It's a popular destination for both locals and tourists, especially during the autumn months when the foliage is at its peak.

Covers 188 hectares, this royal garden features mountain and forest landscapes. Imperial palaces were built during Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Damaged by foreign invasions in 1860 and 1900, it became a public park in 1956.

Recommended Tour Route

Fragrant Hills Park is best explored by following a route that takes you through the main scenic areas and viewpoints. Start at the East Gate, which is the main entrance to the park.

From the East Gate, follow the path to the Jingcui Lake, then head up the hill to the Fragrant Hills Pagoda (Xianglu Peak), which is the highest point in the park at 557 meters.

Along the way, you'll pass several temples and pavilions, including the Azure Cloud Temple (Biyun Si), which is one of the most important temples in the park. From the pagoda, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The best time to visit Fragrant Hills Park is during autumn (late October to early November) when the maple leaves are at their most vibrant.
